WHAT'S NEW IN 2011

2011 will see the Sydney Royal Wine Show become the first capital city wine show to implement a regional grouping judging system, based on geographical indicators (GI), enshrined by the Australian Wine and Brandy Corporation.

Exhibitors entering Class 78 - named Vineyard Shiraz, will be asked to nominate the GI for their entry, either by Zone, Region or Sub-region.

Chairman of Judges, Iain Riggs said as the Australian wine industry heads down a promotion of regionality, wine shows need to address how best to group wines.

"In the past judging has been based on style or vintage, which was useful as it allowed smaller classes to be judged, The new system will avoid the situation of a medium bodied, savoury style wines being in the shadow of a more opulent styles. In its simplest form it is a way of judging 'like with like" said Mr Riggs

Gold medal winning entries in class 78 class will then go forward to a “taste-off” to compete for the Best Wine of Class. If successful the judging process will be extended to other classes from 2012.

Another exciting development for the 2011 Show is the addition of a new Trophy. Formerly the RAS of NSW Annual Prize for Chardonnay, the AP John Coopers Perpetual Trophy will be awarded to the Exhibitor of the best Varietal Wine Chardonnay entered in Classes 22, 31 and 35

2010 CELLAR TASTING

A SUCCESSFUL EVENT

Over 500 people attended this year's Sydney Royal Wine Show Cellar Tasting on 13 February to develop the nose of a master, tasting over 2,300 wines, including trophy and medal winners. The judges' wine tutorials were popular events and the newly introduced cheese and wine matching tutorials with Lyndey Milan were booked out within half an hour after cellar doors opened.

A survey amongst visitors shows that almost everyone had a great time with 93% being satisfied with the event. It was a great event for wine lovers of all ages from all over Sydney. More than half of the surveyed visitors had been to the Cellar Tasting event in the past and as many are planning to be back next year.
