The RAS recognises outstanding achievement through its Sydney Royal Shows and Competitions, with a variety of awards in a multitude of ways.
To win a Sydney Royal award is a significant honour and a part of the history of Australian agricultural. Many of the perpetual trophies have a longstanding association with the Sydney Royal Easter Show (Show) and carry with them the tradition and prestige of the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW (RAS).
Perpetual Trophies are the RAS’ most esteemed award. These trophies not only recognise excellence and achievement in agricultural competition but also the contributions of people and organisations long associated with the RAS.
Some of the current trophies awarded at the Show date back to 1901, when they were first presented. Trophies such as the Hordern and Urqhart Trophies for cattle are the most sought after prizes in the cattle industry.
The range of trophies and awards presented by the Sydney Royal includes the following.
Perpetual Trophies – The RAS’ most prestigious award, a Perpetual Trophy, is recognition of an outstanding contribution to that Competition. Each trophy has been donated by an individual or organisation with a significant connection to the Show or the Competition. Awarded annually in the donor’s name, a Perpetual trophy is a symbol not only of achievement but also of tradition. The winner takes home a memento of the award (a medallion) and their name is engraved on the trophy. The trophy remains with the RAS as part of its trophy collection. Perpetual Trophies come in all shapes and forms, including art works and animated statues.
