Sydney Royal Alpaca Show

Alpacas at the Show Since 1992

Alpaca have been part of the Show consistently since 1992.Prior to this Alpaca competitions have been run intermittently from as early as 1869, perhaps before.Alpacas and wool judging featured on and off from 1869 to 1883 with non competitive classes in the Sheep Section.Alpaca wool was judged in the wool section during this period.

In 1882 and 1883 there were classes for a male and female alpaca, in the dog section while in 1883 no entries were recorded. Classes were not breed-specific, when alpacas initially returned in 1992.

There are two Perpetual Trophies awarded in the Alpaca Section. The Coolaroo Perpetual Trophy for Supreme Champion Huacaya Alpaca was first awarded in 1999.This trophy holds special significance consisting of framed copies of certificates won by Alfred William Holt for his entires of one male and one female alpaca at the 1879 Sydney International Exhibition. The Society was associated with the exhibition where there was a group for Land Animals, which included alpacas, goats, sheep and pigs. The other trophy, the Sherryl Riley Memorial Perpetual Trophy for Senior Champion Male Huacaya Alpaca was introduced in 2004.
