In 1988 the NSW Stock and Station Agents Association INC – held its first Young Auctioneers Competition where the winner received the John Weekes Memorial trophy.
Two years later saw the inaugural National Young Auctioneers Competition borne. It has grown to have finalists from NSW, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia and now WA. The winner and runner-up of each state competition have automatic entry into the National Competition.
The Competition has come along way from the showground at Moore Park to the purpose built facilities at Sydney Olympic Park, which seat up to 1000 people.
For the budding NSW auctioneers, it is a tough selection process to become a NSW State finalist. All nominees must complete a two-day Australian Livestock & Property Agents (ALPA) Auctioneers School program, which polishes their skills. On the second day they are assessed and picked by the ALPA NSW Professional Development and Education Committee. Other states have similar selection criteria.
The ultimate prize, as the winner of the National Young Auctioneers Competition, is to have your name engraved on the Prosser Cup and win a tour of a lifetime to the Calgary Stampede in Canada. The winner will then represent Australia in the International Auctioneers Competition. This tour is run in conjunction with Rural Press and ALPA with Quadrant Australia organising all aspects of the trip. For more information on this tour please contact Ms Sarah Algar of ALPA on (02) 9262 6633.
