Cats first appeared at the Show in the late 19th century with exhibits shown sporadically in 1874, 1876 and 1892.The Cat Section and its Competitions have been a consistent part of the Show since 1929.
In 1998 the Kitten Carnival was introduced and in 2000, classes for companion cats.The Cat Section awards five Perpetual Trophies.The longest running trophy is the EJ Lonsdale Memorial Perpetual Trophy which was first presented in 1963.
Cats are now shown in the Wynne Pavilion which was specifically designed for the section.The Pavilion caters for the display and judging of around 200 cats.The Pavilion was named after Harry Wynne, Honorary Life Member of the RAS.Harry played an important role in persuading the RAS to take over the administration and registration of cats in NSW.Formally the responsibility of the Cat Fanciers Association of which he became Secretary in 1934, cat registration fell under the umbrella of the newly formed RAS Cat Club of NSW (later known as RAS Cat Control).The Cat Club elected a Consultative Committee of which he was Chairman from 1950 to 1984.Wynne was a Steward and Chief Steward during this period and was also involved in getting the RAS behind the Coordinating Cat Council of Australia.
